I get asked this question time and time again. Why do I do this job? Isn’t it stressful? Isn’t there a ton of pressure? The answer is, of course! I work with brides and grooms, and their families, to create the, up to that point, most important day of their lives. The stress and pressure that brings has cost me many sleepless nights. It’s not a job where my brain turns off once I close my computer. I miss family weddings, summer weekends, and sometimes tucking my kids in to bed.
However…I. Love. This. Job. I feel as though I am 100% doing the right career for me. The comfort and confidence that that brings to my day-to-day is an incredible feeling. I don’t work, or go to work, because I have to. I go because I want to. Everyday. Everyday brings something new. New challenges and new rewards. Every couple and every event is different that my days are never the same. Below are a few of the top reasons I do this beautiful job!
I have a job where my clients hug me. A lot. I don’t know how many people get to go to work and get hugs. Of course there are tough conversations and difficult decisions to be made, but at the end of the day, there are hugs. We work on a number of private properties which allow us to get to know the families of our couples very well. We have to have conversations about logistics, about respecting their properties, and about how we can make their space shine and reflect their son or daughter on their wedding day. It’s amazing feeling to feel as though you have had an alli in the planning process. They know I am there to make magic for their kids and we get to bond over that!
With every wedding, and every weekend, comes a new collaborative team of vendors. I am here to tell you the Vancouver has some of the most dedicated, hardworking, passionate and creative professionals here to make MAGIC for you. They loose as much sleep as I do doing what they love. They wake up at 4am to pick out the best blooms, they work 20 hours shifts on ladders to hang your lighting, they haul ass for 12 hours to perfectly capture your day, and they come back at 2am to clean it all up. My job would not be at ALL possible without the support and guidance of these amazing humans.
The Diverse Couples
Of course, as cliché as it may sound, I couldn’t do this job with out our amazing, loving, diverse couples. Every single wedding that comes across our plate is different from the next. They use different keywords to describe the feeling they want from their wedding day. This allows my team and I to step outside of our “wedding boxes” each and every day as we stretch ourselves to create unique and personal events. Their trust in us drives us even harder to create magic for them.
My number one inspiration for doing this job, and doing it well, is to show my kids what happens when hard work pays off. I am lucky that I have easy-going, adaptable, enthusiastic kids. They can be bounced from family babysitter to family babysitter and are happy as can be - during wedding season, they are loved so hard by my husband and family and I know they are in amazing hands. My kids ask questions about my work. They get excited when I take them places I’ve worked (Science World, Convention Centre, Farms, Hotels, the list goes on…!) and I can tell they feel so proud. It blew their little minds that we were going to have a real-live unicorn at one of our weddings last year. They ask about weddings, are inquisitive about types of flowers and know not to touch anything when we have to visit decor warehouses on errand days. They are 100% my motivation for doing this job and I couldn’t be luckier to have them as my little support system.
Bonus - moments like the one below don't hurt either! Seeing my couples faces once al the hard work pays off is the most amazing feeling in the world ;) (Photo Shari+Mike)
